Panorama Curtain: The Master of Stage Illusion and Side Covering

One of the most important tasks in stage mechanics is to direct the audience’s gaze and conceal the technical world “behind the scenes.” The panorama curtain (also known as a side wing) serves precisely this purpose: it provides professional, rotatable coverage on both sides of the stage, concealing the technical backdrop of the stage set from the audience. As experts at szinhazifuggony.hu, we assist in the design and implementation of suitable curtain systems.

Role and Position on Stage

Panoramic wings are an essential part of a theater set. Their main function is to conceal the side wings, allowing the audience to see only what the director intends them to see:

• Rotatable design: Mounted on separate tracks, these allow the curtains to be rotated and moved, enabling the stage set to be adjusted as needed.
• Manual operation: They are typically operated using simple, reliable manual systems, ensuring quick and quiet transitions during the performance.
• An integral part of the system: The panoramic curtains are part of the complete covering system, working in conjunction with the valances (top cover), the backdrop curtain, and the main curtain.

The Unity of Stage Design

The color of the panoramic wings—whether black, dark blue, or deep burgundy—has a fundamental impact on the atmosphere of the performance. Dark tones not only provide effective coverage but also become visually “invisible” from the audience, allowing the lighting and set design to take center stage. Well-chosen, expertly crafted curtains ensure an uninterrupted, professional experience throughout the performance.
