Fire Classification and Test Methods: The MSZ EN 13501-1 Standard System

In the safety design of public buildings, theaters, and event centers, a precise understanding of materials’ fire behavior is critical. As a result of European harmonization, the MSZ EN 13501-1 standard introduced a unified classification system known as “Euroclass,” which allows for the fire safety classification of construction products, including stage textiles and decorative elements.

The Euroclass System: What Has Changed?

The previous country-specific fire hazard assessments have been replaced by a uniform, scientifically based classification system. This system takes into account not only a material’s flammability but also other critical parameters of fire behavior, such as smoke development (s) and burning drips (d):

  • Categories (A1 through F): These categories define a substance's flammability and combustibility.
  • Supplementary classes: These indicate the extent of smoke development (s1, s2, s3) and burning drip (d0, d1, d2).

The Most Important Testing Methods

The standard is based on a series of comprehensive laboratory tests that verify the actual fire behavior of materials:

  • Non-flammability Test (MSZ EN ISO 1182): Determines whether the homogeneous structure of the material can withstand direct exposure to heat without supporting combustion.
  • Determination of Gross Heat of Combustion (MSZ EN ISO 1716): The amount of energy released (calorific value) is measured by burning the sample, which is critical for calculating the fire load.
  • SBI Test (MSZ EN 13823): The "Single Burning Item" test simulates how a fire spreads in the corner of a room, taking into account the product's intended use.
  • Flammability Test (MSZ EN ISO 11925-2): The vertically suspended material (e.g., curtains) is exposed to a direct flame to determine the rate of flame spread.

Why is this important when it comes to theater-grade fabrics?

Theater curtains, backdrops, and sets are large-surface-area, vertically hung textiles for which flammability and smoke development are the primary risk factors. Classification according to the MSZ EN 13501-1 standard allows us to select, with engineering precision, those materials that minimize risk in the event of an emergency.

Expert Support for Compliance

The team of experts at szinhazifuggony.hu not only helps with the procurement of high-quality textiles, but also with interpreting fire safety documentation and selecting materials appropriate for the intended application. Standardized testing ensures that the installed materials comply with regulatory requirements and pass fire department inspections without issue.
