Space Definition: The Structural Foundation of Stage Technology

The theatrical space is not a static entity, but a dynamically adaptable surface that we shape using curtain systems. Defining the space is one of the most important functions of stage technology, allowing directors to narrow, expand, or divide the stage into sections as needed.

The Versatile Applications of Space Delimitation

With the help of curtains and screen elements, we can create multiple distinct spaces even within the stage itself. This structural flexibility is essential in modern theatrical productions:

• Separating the Stage: We use the main curtain and side curtains (wings) to separate the performance area from the technical operations taking place in the background.
• Setting the Backdrop: We use back curtains (cyclopean and panoramic curtains) to add depth to the stage or to create a closed, dark space in order to heighten the dramatic effect.
• Division of the Audience Area: In certain cases, curtains can also be used to functionally divide the audience area, for example, by creating smaller chamber-style spaces or designating acoustic zones.

The Harmony of Safety and Aesthetics

In addition to their function of defining space, theatrical and flame-retardant curtains also provide protection. With the right selection and installation, they can enhance the style of a room while also protecting its occupants—both the performers and the technical staff.
